Social Enterprise in the UK: A question of growth

Beautiful Enterprise | Policy Lab Paper

This Policy Lab paper provides a new and updated assessment of the scale of social enterprise in the UK. Social enterprise accounts for over 130,000 employers and 5% of the UK’s GDP and contnues to grow.

The paper also raises three important questions about how and where this growth is happening:

  • How much do we really know about how social enterprises are growing?

  • Why is their regional distribution across the nation so poorly understood?

  • And are they well represented in deprived areas - or not?

Addressing these questions would give us a better understanding of how and where social enterprises grow, and allow us to shape more effective strategies for social investment and enteprise support - to accelerate the growth of social enterprises.
